Bellaire railroad bridge

Description

Dont pay any attention to this, DA is being stupid.

Just 1/4 mile south of the Bellaire toll bridge is the Benwood-Bellaire railroad bridge. This bridge is even older than the 1925 toll bridge. This was rebuilt 1905 and is still serving as a vital link for coal trains.

Here a W&LE AEP Cardinal power plant coal train with juice to supply the valley with electricity crawls over the structure as it heads north.

Traffic wise, in a ironic turn of fate. These trains disappeared two years ago only to return as northbound emptys and southbound loads.

Look for this bridge in the upcoming movie, "Unstoppable."

Info from this site. [link]

The original steel bridge was built in 1870. The current steel structure was rebuilt in 1905 to accomadate heavier trains. When they rebuilt it, the B&O most of foreseen it to be used for heavier trains as even the massive 2-8-8-4 EM1's crossed this bridge 50 years later. The stone part of the structure is the original stone bridge and at the time it was built the longest stone arch bridge in the world.

Take a look at this to look at diagrams of the bridge!
