Ah, I remembered living in Missouri a few years ago...
Too bad I never able to see one of these real operating steam engines by the time I lived here.

(Believe it or not, the only operating steam locomotive I recall seeing many times in Missouri is the Tommy G. Robertson 4-4-0 locomotive of Six Flags St. Louis in Eureka, MO. Eureka indeed! :D)

Usually the steam engine does. Diesel is just there for breaking and to power the passenger cars.

the steam engine, believe it or not, is also pulling the diesel. the diesel is only used for dynamic braking downgrade and providing electricity for the coaches. A steam locomotive can no longer provide electricity for a train sadly.

Do you know why they lug the diesel around as well? Is it there to generate power for the cars, or as an extra helper, or just in case the steamer breaks down?

Mostly just power for the cars and dynamic breaking. It is also one of Union Pacific heritage locos on its "home" rails.
