Description
Steam from the Homer City Generating Station rises and blows to the east. Like or not, half the power used in the United States is powered by coal fired power plants just like this. And despite what environmentalists will tell you, most plants like this are much cleaner today then just ten years ago. This particular plant produces enough power for 2 million homes!

Some are cleaner, most are getting cleaner, but coal is still a nasty, dirty fuel. And many plants are being shut down and shuttered because of EPA restrictions and even cost-to-power ratios, and the cost of upgrading old plants with new environmental controls, increases. Plus the use of gas and alternative energy resources is growing too. I'm both a power plant (coal in particular!) enthusiast AND an environmentalist. But a practical one. Even as the slice of the energy capacity pie by coal plants decreases, it's still the fuel that controls the largest slice of power at least for the forseeable future. That will continue to decrease, thankfully, but coal power is going to be important for decades to come still. So regulations AND clean(er) technology go hand in hand. Plus these plants are awesome photographic subjects.
